What exactly is Halal?

Halal products are essentially those that are permissible for consumption by Muslims in accordance with Islamic law. The laws stipulate that only certain types of meat may be consumed, and that the meat must be prepared in a specific manner. It is also critical that halal food is not prepared alongside non-halal food, as there is a risk of cross-contamination if a chef, for example, accidentally uses the same knife to cut different types of meat. Some substances are forbidden to eat under Islamic law, whether due to their nature or the manner in which they have been treated or butchered, so all halal meat is prepared in accordance with strict guidelines.

Pig meat

Because pig meat is prohibited, there is no such thing as halal pork, and halal meat must never come into contact with pig meat or anything else that has come into contact with pig meat to avoid contamination.

Blood

Because blood is considered harmful to consume, halal meat should be completely drained of blood as part of its preparation, which also keeps the meat fresher for longer.

Carnivores Halal meat must never contain or come into contact with carnivore or bird of prey meat.

Carrion

Because humans should not eat an already dead animal, meat prepared in a halal way is killed as part of the slaughter process; most western preparations kill the animal first and then slaughter it later.

Strangulation, beating, goring, or savaging are all forms of abuse.

To be halal, animals must be slaughtered quickly and in a specific manner; eating meat from an animal that has been strangled, beaten, or gored is unacceptable.

During the slaughter process, Allah's name should be pronounced over the meat as a form of thanksgiving; any animal slaughtered in the name of another idol is never halal.

Dhabiha

This is the name given to the halal method of slaughter, which requires animals to be killed with a razor-sharp incision to the throat. The animal must never witness another animal being slaughtered or the blade being sharpened. Prior to slaughter, animals must be checked for health and given clean water to drink. Once they have drunk, they are turned to face Mecca, the name of Allah is spoken, and the throat is cut and the blood drained from the carcass.

When done correctly, the sudden drop in blood pressure to the brain kills the animal's brain in seconds, and many researchers have discovered that Dhabiha is less stressful and painful to the animal than modern western methods of slaughter. All of this is done to ensure that the meat is fresh and free of impurities, that the animal is treated with respect, and that Allah is thanked for providing us with food.

If you have any questions about the halal status of our products, please do not hesitate to contact us.

If you need a copy of our HMC certificate to display in your store, please email hmc@sweetzone.co.uk and we will send it to you as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, HMC had some issues with counterfeiters stealing certificates and modifying them to show their own names and products, so they asked us if we could avoid keeping copies online.

Thank you, Khayr.
